Alicante Golf This
Seve Ballesteros designed course is on the outskirts of
Alicante city
and close to the San Juan beaches and is unique because the
course is
par 72 consisting of six par 3 holes, six par 4 holes and six
par 5 holes.
On the par 5 14th hole you actually play over old Roman ruins
and the lake
on the 9th hole is in the shape of an 'S' for Seve.
The course is relatively flat but there are long distances
between greens and
tees and therefore a buggy is almost a must.
There are excellent practice facilities with a 70 bay driving
range, practice
bunkers and chipping and putting areas.
The clubhouse and facilities are open all year around from
08.00 till 18.00 in
the winter and 08.00 to 21.00 in the summer months.

Mike Say's:
"This golf course was opened in 1998 and was designed by one of my all time
golfing idols - Seve Ballesteros and you can see the influence of the major
golf courses that he has played in the design.
You have it all, large shaped American bunkers, large undulating greens ,water
hazards and even Roman ruins.
Quite simply in my opinion, week in and week out this is the best golf course
on the Costa Blanca in terms of design, playability, value for money and overall
presentation.
If you do not play this course if you have the chance then boy oh boy have
you made a big mistake.
If only the prices in the bar were more reasonable it would be perfection."

| Directions:
Departing from Murcia or Torrevieja take the A7 motorway and exit at
junction 68 and keep left at the first island following signs for Benidorm,
San Juan via parque/playas.
Continue over three more islands always in the direction of the playas.
After the 4th island travel for 1km and the clubhouse is on the left with the
Hesperia hotel on your right.
A good land mark on your left is the building with Hansa Urbana because
that is where the clubhouse is located.
Unless you take and illegal turn you must travel up to the next island and
back on yourself for approx 200 metres with the clubhouse on your right |

The course score card and course review:
Well just what can I say about Alicante Golf?
Very simply it is by far the best golf course on the Costa Blanca.
While other courses may be up in arms at these comments you may simply
be asking why do I make these comments?
The average golfer living in or visiting the area is easy pleased and if you give
him/her a golf course presented in good order and at good value for money
they will be satisfied and that is what you get at Alicante.
The course is unique because the par 72 consists of an equal number of par 3's,
par 4's and par 5's.
What is also unique to this part of Spain is that if the course is below standard
due to any work being undertaken on the course they reflect this in a reduced
green fee.
What is even more impressive is that if they need to use 'temporary greens'
these are produced months in advance and in most cases are as good as or better
than the normal greens on other courses, even if a little on the small size.
In the summer months of July and August they normally provide reduced
green fee packages where two people can play, with a buggy, for the sum of
only €72.
What a deal!
I do not want to say too much about the course because it speaks for itself
you have par 5's that are reachable but fraught with danger and long par 3's
that will take your best hit to reach them.
Add to this the bunkers ,water and overall 'tightness' of the course and you
get a feel for what I am saying.
The course winds itself through an urbanisation and therefore is very 'American'
in this respect but you soon forget this due to the quality of the course.
Do I have any negative comments?
The only bad comment that I can make is that the bar prices are too high but
the typical Brit will just wander over the bridge linking the clubhouse with the
urbanisation and find Spanish bars with more acceptable price levels.
I just wish we did not have to do this type of thing!
Anyway enough of that type of talk, just concentrate on the positive and I repeat
that week in, week out this is the best golf course on the Costa Blanca in terms
of playability, value for money and presentation.
Miss playing it at your peril!
Until the next time
Mike
