Don
Cayo: This 9 hole golf course is located in the foothills of the Sierra Bernia
mountains and close to the towns of Altea and La Nucia and of course the
world famous holiday resort of Benidorm.
The course was co-designed by Pedro Barber and Gregorio Sands and
although only a 9 hole layout playing a full 18 hole round it can prove to be
a difficult test of golf.
Prior to the development of the Real de Faula golf complex at Terra Mitica
this was probably the best known and used of the courses in the area with
something like 75,000 tee times available per annum.
The facilities include good practice facilities with five driving bays, chipping
and putting areas and a practice bunker.
The clubhouse facilities are located such to give wonderful views over
the coastal and sea area and offer an excellent service with a well stocked
bar and a variety of meals.
The facilities are open from 08.00am to evening all year round.

Mike Says:
"There appears to be some conflict in the records as to when the course was
first opened but for sure it is between 1974 and 1976 and so is well
established.
The Director of Golf informed me that there have been some recent changes
to the higher holes due to problems with home owners bordering the course.
This course is hillier than most with holes winding up, down and around the
hillside with beautiful views of the coast.
All standards of golfer will find the 580 metre par 5, 5th hole and 227 metre
par 3,6th hole no easy task.
When you finish your round take time to enjoy the views from the veranda
on the clubhouse."

 |
Directions: Written directions to the course are
limited but in general the course is
located 60km from Alicante airport and is 4km north of the
town of Altea
and 10 minutes drive from La Nucia.
Probably the best way to find the course is to head in a
northerly direction
past Altea on either the A7 or the N332 and look for the
signposts for the
course.
The N332 route is considerably the more scenic route passing
along the
coast with excellent mountain and sea views.

The course score card and course review:
If you are spending your holiday in the Benidorm are and fancy a round of
golf then Don Cayo is ideal for you although do not expect it to be an easy
task.
Situated in the foothills of the Sierra Bernia mountains this is a 'hilly, tree
lined golf course requiring patience and accuracy off the tee.
Visually it gives the appearance of being a little 'cramped' for space on some
of the holes but will test your golf and walking skills.
If you find walking 18 holes difficult then this is not the course for you and
pay the money and use a buggy.
You should note however that this is a busy and well used golf course with
approx 75,000 tee times available per annum and this is a course well used
by ex-pat residents in the area, so be advised and book a tee time in advance.
The golf course was co-designed by Pedro Barber and Gregorio Sands some
30 years ago and is well established although there have been some recent
changes on the course with a disruption to available tee times.
The main difficulties on the course are the long par 5, 5th hole which at
580 metres is a particularly difficult hole and is quickly followed by the par 3,
6th hole which at 227 metres will test your strength and accuracy.
Elsewhere on the course the landing areas are kinder and the 7th hole
provides superb views of the Marina Baixa and the mountains surrounding it.
The clubhouse offers bar and restaurant services and wonderful views of the
surrounding area BUT do not expect Benidorm prices here.
Hasta pronto,
Mike.
