La Finca golf property rentals direct from the owners
La Finca golf club holiday accommodation

La FincaLa Finca Golf Club is part of the Quara group who also own Las Ramblas and Villamartin and is situated at the foot of Mount Escotera. The course has been open for approx 5 years and has been designed with Championship golf in mind. The designer has presented the course with the widest variety of different greens to be seen on the Costa Blanca, although some think too varied. The course has good views and a number of lakes with running water ensuring plenty of wild birds and vegetation. A new club house and hotel are currently under construction and the practise facilities are excellent with two chipping and putting greens, practise bunker and a driving range played off grass.

La Finca Mike Say's: "Most committed golfers can not visit this part of Spain without playing this golf course although at €75 per round it is one of the more expensive courses in the region. The course is unique in that it has nineteen holes with a short par three over water being used when maintenance work is being conducted on any of the other greens. The course is a good test of golf although personally I think that the course designer has gone OTT with the variety of shapes and sizes of the greens. The general condition of the course varies from excellent to very average over the golfing year. The course staff are friendly and courtious but the clubhouse administration and golf pro's can be surly at times. The facilities are generally excellent although yet again the bar prices are a little on the pricey side and who knows what will happen when the new clubhouse and hotel are opened? "

Directions: Travelling from either Cartagena or Alicante, leave the AP7 at the exit for Torrevieja Norte and follow signs for San Miguel. After only 50 metres take the exit off the small traffic island to Montebello and Algorfa. At the next traffic island take the second exit, again in the direction of Algorfa. Stay on this road for approx 2km until you reach the traffic island with the large waterfall,go over this for 50 metres to the next island with the smaller water feature and again go straight ahead and down the hill. You will pass the golf course on your right and the car parks are after approx 1000 metres.

The Course Review - La Finca Golfers of all standards will find this golf course a tough golfing challenge, even off the forward yellow tees the course is still 6032 metres long. Play good golf shots and you will get good results, play bad shots and you will be punished by the numerous water hazards. The key feature of this golf course is the great variety of sizes and shapes of the greens with some 100 metres long and ten metres wide, others 100 metres wide and ten metres long, some completely square in shape (like a bowling green), some completely bowl shapes and some the size and shape of a kidney bean. While you may find this mildly interesting as you go around the course,I personally think that they spoil what could be a really good golf course. Being totally honest I would dig up half of the greens and start again, nothing to do with the quality just the silly shapes and sizes, you will see what I mean! The feature hole on the course is the 323 metres par 4 seventeen hole which is also stroke index 2 on the card. The hole has a lake directly in front of the tee and all the way to the green so the challenge is simple,go for the green and take your chances or bail out to the fairway which runs around the right hand edge of the lake BUT there is a sting in the tail here because the fairway is narrow and is bordered on the other side by yet another water hazard. This really is risk and reward golf at it's best BUT a genuine card wrecker if you get it wrong and is tantalising because nearly all golfers will have a shot against the card here. There are a number of other good golf holes here with many bunkers and well positioned streams and lakes. While the course is a little on the pricey side it is still worth the visit although as usual don't be surprised at the level of food and beverage prices. You will find the course staff extremely helpful BUT some of the clubhouse staff and administration staff and golf pro's need to take a happy pill at times. The owners have been constructing a new clubhouse and hotel for what feels like an eternity and with this being Spain who knows what will happen to green fees and bar prices once these are all open next year.
Until the next time Mike
