The
Playa Serena: This golf course is situated near to Roquetas de Mar in Almeria and is
a distance of 25km from Almeria airport and is a short distance from the
A92 Mediterraneo highway making travel links relatively easy.
Since it's opening in 1979 this course has held a number of Spanish
national tournaments and the pre-dominant feature of the course are the
nine lakes of which seven are natural.
Given the location of the course it remains in excellent condition all year
around and in addition to the numerous water hazards the course is
defended by easterly winds and well designed green side bunkers.
The course is suitable for all standards of golfer and although there is
a significant amount of water and rough the fairways are extremely
generous in width.
As you would expect the complex offers all of the services that you would
need including a friendly bar, restaurant and swimming pool where you
can relax and discuss your round with fellow golfers.

Mike Says:
"This golf course was designed by Peter Allis, the TV pundit and former
Ryder Cup player in collaboration with former European tour player
Angel Gallardo.
The course was first opened to the public in 1979 and is sufficiently
difficult to have staged a number of Spanish circuit trial competitions.
The course runs parallel with the Mediterranean Playa Serena and is
considered to be the 'flattest' in Spain BUT with water being a dominant
feature on twelve of the holes, when the wind blows from the East this
becomes a really challenging test of golf.
After you have played your golf the complex includes a shop, restaurant,
bar and swimming pool where you can relax."

Directions:
There is no need to enter the city of Almeria but you should continue on
the A92 Mediterraneo highway in the direction of Malaga and Motril.
Exit the A92 at the junction signposted for Roguetas de Mar, El Parador
and Aguaduice.
At the first traffic island continue straight ahead in the direction of
Roguetas de Mar and when you arrive there just follow the signs for the
urbanizaciones and eventually you will come upon signs sending you to
Playa Serena.

The course score card and course review:
If you are holidaying or visiting the Almeria area and fancy a game of golf
then Playa Serena is one of the courses you should strongly consider.
The course was designed by Peter Allis the famous TV commentator
and Spaniard Angel Gallardo who may not be that well known to some of
you BUT in the early 1980's I saw an exhibition match at the opening of
Telford golf course in the UK featuring Neil Coles, Howard Clark, Angel
Gallardo and Francisco Abreu and there were 14 birdies and 2 eagles
between them in 18 holes of golf, so he has my respect and knows his stuff.
Peter Allis has collaborated on many course designs with Dave Thomas
and these include the Belfry and Hill Valley in the Midlands and this can
be seen on this course with the design of the greenside bunkers and the
shape and undulations of the greens and use of the existing natural water
hazards.
On a personal note Peter Allis is a nice guy who on an annual basis when
commentating on the British Open always gives a mention to the
Benijofar Golf Society of which I am the current Captain here in Spain.
This particular course has generously wide fairways but the rough is tough
in places and when combined with the seven lakes on the course and the
easterly winds the need is for power and accuracy off the tee.
I have it upon good authority that this course is the 'flattest' in Spain and
therefore the wind, when it blows, is a major factor in providing the course
with some form of defence allied with difficult long holes and the design
of the greens.
Being such a flat course those amongst us who prefer to walk rather than
use a lazy mans buggy will find this course an interesting prospect.
As Walter Hagen used to say take the opportunity to walk and smell
the flowers.
When you relax with a long cool drink and lament about your golf with your
friends and fellow golfers just remember that whatever else happens, a bad
day on the golf course is better than a good day at work!
Until the next time,
Mike.
