The course score card and course review:
When I played the Championship course it was still awaiting final clearance and
licences to open officially.
As a result there were no marker boxes on the tees or next tee signs so finding
your way around the course was more difficult than it will be when formally
opened.
Similarly the distance markers were positioned on sprinkler heads on the fairways
which were at times difficult to see from distance and caused slow play as you
searched backwards and forwards for the correct distance BUT again when opened
formally this situation should change.
Due to the fact that the clubhouse was still under construction, the changing, shop,
toilet and parking facilities were temporary in nature BUT when complete it is clear
that the clubhouse will be magnificent.
However given the generally high level of the green fee price I guess that the costs
to eat and drink in the new clubhouse bar and restaurant will be equally high.
The best thing about the visit is the golf course which is typically Jack Nicklaus
with wide fairways flanked by undulating mounds, strategically placed water hazards,
well designed and positioned bunkers and fast undulating greens making two putting
difficult from any sort of distance.
Jack Nicklaus as a designer concentrates on risk and reward, take a brave line off the
tee and you have easier access to the flag but 'bail out' safe off the tee and you will
find the second shot much harder with smaller landing areas.
We did have an unusual occurrence on the par 3 12th hole where each of our tee
shots came up short on the apron of the green and after putting level with or just past
the pin found the ball coming back past us until we were 5 yards off the green with a
chip.
I am sorry but to me this is just not golf as it should be played BUT this was the only
complaint that I had about the course.
The par 3's are difficult and the par 5's can be reached with courage and a good swing
and the par 4's offer a range of difficulty and birdie opportunities.
The walk over the course gives lovely views of the sea and mountains but if you find
walking 18 holes difficult than get yourself a buggy, if you can afford it!
As a golfing experience you will enjoy the course which put me in mind a little of
St Mellion in Cornwall, which is another Nicklaus course.
Until the next time,
Mike.
